Our Education team at the Hewlett Foundation been looking into this balance between teaching and content over the past year. As we embarked on a refresh of our grantmaking strategy for open educational resources (OER), it was apparent that the field was at an inflection point. Since OER’s inception almost two decades ago, we have advocated for well-designed, customizable, openly licensed materials to enable more responsive teaching and better learning. We now know that without equal or greater attention to educators and learners’ experiences, we are not going to see deeper learning outcomes for students across the spectrum.
