Chemeketa Community College president: We're tackling cost of textbooks Jessica Howard, Statesman

We started Chemeketa Press, the college’s academic publishing arm, in 2015. The goal was to empower our faculty to publish their own peer-reviewed textbooks and lower book expenses for our students. Since then, our faculty has published more than 30 books, saving our students an estimated $2.5 million. Many of these books cost less than $20 and have proven to be more effective than similar titles from commercial publishers or open educational resources (OER). This has helped reduce the market power of commercial publishers, allowing the college to negotiate textbook prices and create another avenue for student savings.
